Long-Promised Report
by Almo ~ June 18th, 2005
So, I got back from Girl’s State at 11:30 this morning and promptly took a 4 hour nap. I’m still tired, but not enough to fall asleep; just enough to be really lethargic and lazy. Anyway, here’s a day-by-day account of my adventures.
Sunday, June 12th - Ellensburg doesn’t know what hit them
I got to Central Washington University at about 2. Checked in, met some really cool people and found my room, which was pretty nice. Overcame my first challenge of the week: making a bunk bed. Met my roommate Beth and some other members of my city. Was one of 3 girls in my city to pass the bar exam, meaning I could run for judicial positions. Went to flag lowering and dinner, then to assembly and finally to bed.
Monday, June 13th - Speaking is Scary
Got endorsed to run for Supreme Court Justice by my county. Made a beautiful poster. Heard waaaay to many speeches. Wanted to grab the microphone during the issue questions. (Note to self: NEVER ATTEND CHEER CAMP.) Ate. Made a totally awesome speech to entire assembly as part of my campaign for Supreme Court Justice. Was hawt. Sat. Listened. Went to bed.
Tuesday, June 14th - Good deed of the week
Woke up. Wrote bill eliminating senior projects. Heard speeches. Lots of speeches. Was about to hang self with nametag, but then it was activity period. (Haaaallelujah!) Heard some really cool speakers, including Freddie, a retired CIA agent who’s now a member of the peace corps in Mali. I HATE CHEERS! ENOUGH ROCKING THE HOUSE!
Freddie told us all about her village and I wanted to do something to help. I had the idea of raising money, and went around and talked to all the cities to collect it. By the end of the week, we had $468.55. I also wrote a letter in French to the teacher at the school asking if his classes wanted a pen-pal. I’ll see what comes of it and, as always, will keep you all posted.
Wednesday, June 15th - The day of reckoning
Got election results. Lost.
Was sad for a while, but one of my new friends made a good point; I may have not gotten a position, but I got all that money and in the end, that’s going to have WAAAAAAAAAAAY more of an impact. Went to judicial session. It was really interesting and really boring by turns.
Thursday, June 16th - “Womenfolks have babies”
I was a witness in a mock trial about a girl on a boys soccer team. I scared the attorney really bad by saying stuff like that in my pre-trial interview. Behaved in the actual trial, and my side won. YAY! Ate. Sat. Listened. Slept. Had ’story time with Jennah’. Note to Self: Cosmo is dirty.
Friday, June 17th - That was some partay… zzZZzzZZzz
Went to last judicial session. Tried a counselor, that was fun. Got lots of numbers. Slept. Ate. Graduated. Tried to have a city partay, but it didn’t work out because everyone fell asleep.
Saturday, June 18th - So long, farewell, etc.
Got voted Most Outstanding Citizen for my city. (Thanks ladies!) Said many fond farewells and got on bus. Got home at 11:45, slept.
So, there you have it; a really short synopsis. I’ve learned a lot, and have overcome my fear of public speaking. I recommend to my sophomore friends that they go. I had a blast.
